ESCP London Campus is proud to announce that Professor Giulio Nardella has been awarded the prestigious 'Georgetown Best Paper in International Business and Policy' award.

The award was presented to Prof. Nardella and his co-authors at the Academy of Management (AOM) Annual Conference 2024 in Chicago on 12 August 2024.

Their paper, titled "Wish you weren't here: Tax Havens, Corruption, and the Reputation Damage of the Multinational Enterprise", provides insights into how the use of tax havens — particularly those associated with corruption — affects multinational enterprises' reputations and increases stakeholder perceptions of risk.

This is the second time Prof. Nardella has received the Best Paper Award from the Academy of Management's International Management (IM) Division, this time alongside co-authors Prof. Stephen Brammer (Dean of the University of Bath School of Management, UK), Prof. Chris Jones (Aston University, UK), and Prof. Yama Temouri (Khalifa University, UAE). The IM Division Georgetown Best Paper in International Business and Policy Award honours the best scholarly paper with strong policy implications in an international context.

It's wonderful to be recognised by the Academy of Management and the IM Division for our research. Our study highlights the often-overlooked reputation risks that multinational enterprises face when engaging with tax havens. While the relationship between tax haven use and corporate reputation has often been considered limited, our findings demonstrate that these risks are much more significant than previously thought. Overall, tax havens have highly detrimental impacts on the financial health and functioning of society. Therefore, it is important to shed light on the darker aspects of international business that tax havens represent.

His work examines issues such as; penalising and curbing irresponsible behaviour, the "dark side" of international business, unsustainable or hypocritical corporate practices, the strategic management of institutional complexity, and the use and abuse of tax havens.

Earlier this year, Prof. Nardella also received the Best Paper award from the British Academy of Management's Performance Management Division for "Is (S)he Worth It? Behavioural Agency, CEO Compensation Complexity and Growth in Firm Productivity" and was the runner-up for the 'Journal of World Business Best Published Paper of 2023' for "What Happens Abroad, Stays Abroad? Exploring How Corporate Social Irresponsibility in Domestic and International Markets Influences Corporate Reputation." This paper also won the 'Best Paper Award in Corporate Social Responsibility and Sustainability' at the 2020 Academy of Management conference.
