The “Fashion and Technology” Chair aims at analysing and promoting, throughout ESCP students and alumni but also a wide community interested in these issues, the role of technology as a catalyst of innovation for the Fashion and Luxury sectors.

Lectra is the world leader in integrated technology solutions specifically designed for industries using fabrics, leather, technical textiles, and composite materials to manufacture their products.

The Chair, launched on the 6th February 2014, is led by Valerie Moatti, Professor at ESCP and specialist in growth strategies and the strategic dimension of Supply Chain Management, and Celine Abecassis–Moedas who is a Professor at the Universidade Católica Portuguesa, where she teaches strategy and innovation management, and an Affiliate Professor at ESCP.

Innovation is in the DNA of Lectra and is expressed in our technological advances to serve new business models. For 40 years, it has enabled us to support fashion industry changes and contribute to the development of our client base.
As part of our commitment to the training of tomorrow's professionals, this desire to innovate has led us to create the "Fashion and Technology" Chair with ESCP. We want to help innovation advance further through education and research in France and abroad, for the benefit of the entire fashion industry.

Market globalization, competition from emerging countries, fast-fashion, and growth of retail and communication channels are requiring the fashion and luxury sectors to address major issues mainly related to innovation. The Chair’s main objective is to explore the specificities of the fashion and luxury sectorsand their approach to technologies linked to design and supply change management. There will also be a focus on the challenges of digital development and on the emergence of value-added strategies for innovation and original business models in developing countries, particularly China.

Lectra and ESCP share the ambition to create a centre for research and transmission of knowledge about the interaction of technology and innovation in the fashion and luxury goods sectors.

Deepen and promote the role of technology as a catalyst for innovation

The “Fashion and Technology” Chair aims to deepen and promote the role of technology as a catalyst for innovation, considered in its multiple forms in the fashion and luxury goods sector, among ESCP students and alumni but also a large community interested in these issues.

Analyse the emergence of new strategies and new “business models”

In particular, the chair will make it possible to analyse the emergence of new strategies and new “business models”, especially in China, to examine the specificities of the fashion and luxury goods industries and their approach to creation and innovation in the face of new technology, to embed technology in the developmental challenges of the supply chain, of the digital world and of retailing…

Areas of research

Creation, production, IT, retail, supply chain... many are the professions and activities in the fashion industry in which technology is a source of innovation. These multiple viewpoints will structure the chair’s work and activities.

They will indeed focus on new approaches to innovation and new business models in the creative industries, especially fashion, with a particular focus on certain emerging markets like China.

Lectra has long worked with ESCP on issues relating to innovation.

It is in this context that the “Fashion and Technology” Chair, which is dedicated to teaching and research on the interaction between technology and innovation in its many different forms in the fashion and luxury goods sector, was created.

Since its creation in 1973, Lectra has always embedded innovation at the core of its business and development strategy.
Innovation is a key element for Lectra, which puts all its expertise and creative energy at the service of a single purpose: supporting its customers - clothing, car or furniture manufacturers, as well as a wide variety of other industries (aerospace, shipbuilding, etc.) - in an increasingly demanding world, without geographical or cultural boundaries, where competition puts constant pressure on prices, production rates and creativity.
Lectra has a holistic approach to innovation and makes it the driver both of its business model and of its competitiveness.
